Pop the question. We’ll capture the moment.

What To Expect

Banff Photography is on a mission to tell your story. We’re here to ensure you have a stress-free experience where you can be your authentic self in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. We’ll talk about your vision for your family, couple, maternity, or wedding images, and create memories you’re going to have for the rest of your lives.

Be prepared to run, skip, walk, laugh, prance, dance, and everything in between. The best smiles are the real ones and we will find a way to show that off, candidly.

We take a unique approach to capturing your story. We ask questions, we find the details, we are curious about your story and what brought you to the mountains, and we try to express that in your images. We don’t take your trust lightly and work very hard to make sure you’re satisfied with your final images and the memories they hold.

Proposals 101 - Nick’s Playbook

Looking for a foolproof proposal? Nick’s your guy. With years of experience, he’s crafted the ultimate guide to proposing in Banff.

Want to get off the beaten path?

Whether it's hiking Banff's greatest trails, visiting Moraine Lake, or enjoying your own private helicopter ride, you'll take in the magic while someone else captures it all.

Let’s Keep it Between You and Me

The Tourist
Method #1

With the first method, we will begin by requesting a photo of you and your partner so that we can easily identify you on the day of the proposal. We will meet at the designated location and time, where your photographer will play the part of a tourist taking photos of the landscapes. Once you have identified your photographer, you will casually ask them to take a photo of you and your partner on your phone. Once the you are in frame and the phone is pointed at you, that is your cue to take one knee, be present and leave the rest to your photographer.

Keep It Simple
Method #2

Let’s keep it Simple. Your photographer will send you a detailed map of Lake Louise, Banff, or the location of your choice. X marks the spot. A few texts or emails will be exchanged the day of to make sure everything is a go. Your photographer will look like a tourist taking photos of the landscapes when you and your partner walk into the frame. You can take your time and pop down onto your knee while your photographer does everything else.

Three unique perspectives of one iconic lake.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Q&A

  • Generally, these are the two methods we stick with to keep the surprise. Linked Here (on the surprise proposal page). Reach out to your photographer through email or text to coordinate and discuss specifics.

  • Depending on the time of the year, your plans for the day, when sunrise and sunset take place, and which package you book, that will determine which location your photographer recommends. You can see all of our favourite locations here. Proposal Locations.

If you have a preferred location, let your photographer know and they’ll recommend the best time of day. Your photographer will give you an β€œX marks the spot” map for each specific location to help make sure you’re dropping a knee at the perfect spot.

  • Great question! Multiple locations refer to different backgrounds and compositions within the same spot. For example, at Tujak Lake, we’ll capture photos in various scenic areas around the lake, providing diverse backdrops without leaving the location. More locations mean more variety in your photos. If you have more questions, feel free to reach out to our team!

  • Mornings are our most popular choices, between 5-7 am in the summer months, and 8-10 am in the winter months. Mornings tend to offer softer diffused lighting and are also great if you want to avoid the crowds, as the afternoon is typically busier.

Afternoon photoshoots can be great for "Golden Hour" (the sought-after lighting condition for beautiful photos). Based on the time of the year you book, please speak to our photographers regarding a recommended sunset time.

  • Picture this - you roll up to a full parking lot and have to park half a kilometre down the road to walk to the scenic location only to have sun in your eyes and a hundred people on each side of you. Sound romantic?

Midday light is a photographer’s nightmare causing squinted eyes, harsh shadows on faces, and blown-out mountains (you’ll lose that beautiful background). The easiest way to avoid all of this is waking up a little earlier for a sunrise shoot or opting for a sunset shoot.

  • 1. You go to the wrong location, it wouldn’t be the first time, so please make sure you are clear where to go. Your photographer will provide you with an β€œX” marks the spot map to help. You can also request an example video of your desired location that might make things clear.

    2. Depending on your proposal method, you might ask the wrong person for a photo. Your photographer will tell you what they are wearing ahead of time so you know who to look out for.

    3. You propose looking away from the photographer. The goal is to see half of your face and half of your partner’s face, align yourself so you are perpendicular to your photographer and the scenic view (not having your back to your photographer and not having your partners back to your photographer). If you are still left with questions, ask your photographer and they’ll do their best to explain.

  • When shooting in Banff and its surrounding areas, it's best to stick with neutral and earth-tone colours such as blues, whites, greys, blacks etc. This way, you can coordinate with your partner's clothing easily without clashing. In the summer, you can add a pop of colour with blues and yellows, but during the winter, it's best to avoid wearing white as it can blend in with the snow.

  • *Nick aims to edit and deliver galleries within 6-8 weeks of your session, however during peak season this can vary. A rush rate is available and can applied if you wish to receive your final gallery within 1 week of the session. For more information on rush fees please contact Nick directly after booking.

  • A notice of 60 days must be given to receive a refund. If not, bookings can be rescheduled or a credit can be held on your account.

  • Cancellations happen but are rare; luckily, we’ve been known to do our best to accommodate people's preferred dates. Contact our team, and we’ll work together to find a day and time that suits your schedule.

There is no guarantee we’ll be able to accommodate your request, but β€œyou miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”

    - Wayne Gretzky
    - Michael Scott
    - Nick Laferriere

  • We shoot rain, snow, or shine! Rocky Mountain weather can be unpredictable and our job is to make any weather condition work. If the weather is not cooperative, we will do our best to reschedule.

  • Props are always a fun way to mix up your photoshoot! If you have anything you'd like in the photo such as an engagement sign, flowers, or a blanket, bring them with you. For families with young children, we recommend that you bring a few toys to keep their attention during the shoot.

  • We got you. This is something we do every day, so don’t stress. For most of our clients, this is their first-ever photo shoot, so we guide you through beginning to end, from where to look to what to do with your hands. We’ll tell you what looks good and correct anything that feels off, all you have to do is smile!

  • We love to hear your ideas! Our photographers have their go-to poses, and part of what you’re signing up for is our style. That said, if you have a special pose, or a Pinterest-worthy inspo shot you want to replicate, let your photographer know during your shoot, and we’ll see if we can accommodate. Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee we can accommodate any request for the sake of time and logistics but we’ll do our best!

  • Photography is our specialty, from shooting, to editing, to delivery. We provide only the edited JPEG files to you copy-right released.

  • Through minor editing, removing distractions from the background, and enhancing the colours and clarity of the mountains, we strive for a timeless style that you can show off for years. If you desire further editing, please speak to your photographer first so we can better evaluate your needs.

Additional edits are subject to a fee based on what’s required.

  • Entry and service fees are charged at most national parks and national historic sites, where revenues are kept to support visitor services and facilities. This means that every time you visit a park or site you are investing in its future β€” and in a legacy for future generations.

For more information about specific costs, see the Government of Canada’s website.

  • Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee a video with your photos. We know a lot of people book with us after finding our social media accounts and love the attention those videos receive, but with how many sessions we have, we can’t record them all. If a video is taken, you can keep an eye on our social channels to see if we post it!

  • Trust us, we get it, this is the biggest moment of your life! Understandably, you want everything to go perfectly! That's why we provide resources such as our Proposal Locations Walkthrough and our FAQ Page. It's not uncommon for your photographer to reach out a couple of days before your shoot, in some cases, the day before. If you have questions regarding your shoot, the quickest way to get an answer is by email; hello@banffphotography.com.
